Rwanda: Kwita Izina – Protecting an Incredible Heritage

Are you searching for an extraordinary destination? You’ve found it! The World Economic Forum report 2017 states Rwanda as the safest African country and the 9th safest country in the world.

This most certainly adds the destination, Rwanda to list of considered destination. But today, we start bringing more information about Rwanda to you – and this is suitable to move the destination high on your bucket list.

Did you ever hear about Kwita Izina?

Rwanda has an incredible heritage – it is one of the very few countries that are home to the highly endangered mountain gorilla population and Kwita Izina is the Rwandan way to celebrate and protect this heritage.

It is also the Rwandan way to invite the world in participating and contributing in the protection of the mountain gorilla population aa well as finding a safe way to observe mountain gorillas in their incredibly beautiful natural environment without disturbing these magnificent species and evolutionary such a near relative to us – the homo sapiens.

During the period between 27 July and 5 September community projects are being launched to support the development of tourism while protecting the countries natural heritage.

Familiarisation tours are organized for international tour operators and planners between 31 August to 8th September. You should keep this in mind for your 2019 plans.

From the 4th to 5th September 2018, the Conservation Exhibition and the Conversation on Conservation is hosted in Kigali, the nation’s capital. You will find an extraordinary wealth of information and discussions on the various conservation initiatives as well as tourism related products and services available to be integrated in your programs – and designed to make you event a once-in-a-lifetime-experience.

September 7th is designed to celebrate the babies, Kwita Izina is the naming ceremony for the mountain gorilla babies born during the past year. The ceremony takes place in Kinigi, Volcanoes National Park. Kwita Izina has been part of Rwandan culture for centuries. The name attributed to a baby gorilla plays a significant role in the ongoing programme of monitoring each individual gorilla in its family group and habitat. In 2018, 18 baby gorillas are expected to be named and celebrated.

The closing Kwita Izina event is Igitaramo – a Cultural Celebratory dinner. The objective of this fundraising dinner is to support Rwanda’s ongoing successful conservation projects specifically ‘Expansion of the Gorilla Habitat’.

Participation in celebrating Rwanda’s conservation success story helps to protect the Rwandan wildlife and biodiversity for future generations. The celebration is a uniquely Rwandan dinner with great entertainment and local style cuisine on the shores of idyllic Lake Kivu in Rubavu.

Italy: Convention Bureau Italia Launches the Lead Generation Service and Welcomes Six New Members

CBItalia closes the agreement with Gaining Edge dedicated to the network that now counts 116 units.

Convention Bureau Italia has signed a new strategic agreement with an important Lead Generation agency operating worldwide, Gaining Edge to guarantee the generation of customised Leads dedicated to each Destination associated with the CBItalia network. Network that has been enriched since January 2018 of six new prestigious memberships that have chosen the guarantee of a national bureau, bringing the network to 116 units.

The agreement with the consulting agency provides for the generation of potentially interesting Leads for the Italian destinations involved. Each destination will also receive unique and specific leads based on its characteristics. The investment undertaken by CBItalia guarantees the network to receive real business opportunities and additional and detailed information on each individual lead, which are of fundamental importance in the application process of an international event. Finally, the agreement includes a two-day training seminar to be held on August 30th and 31st which will alternate training sessions and workshops, with the aim of analysing the application process at 360 degrees.

In terms of new membership, the network acquires six major new members from January 2018 and brings the representativeness of the national convention bureau to 2000 companies in Italy. The network now reaches the quota of 116 affiliations by qualified operators in the sector. Venice is confirmed as the most representative destination, thanks to the entrance of Hotel Excelsior Lido in Venice. Among the new members, Du Lac & Du Park Grand Resort, on the beautiful Lake Garda, Tuo Logo and Cosepuri-Autotrasporti Bologna, national providers, DMC Gastaldi Global Travel and finally Superstudio Events, the Congress and Venue Center in Milan.

CSR: Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts launches its 2018 ‘Kilo of Kindness’ global charity campaign

The successful initiative, now in its fourth year, calls on guests to donate at least one kilo of food, clothing and educational supplies to disadvantaged communities around the world.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is lending a hand to people in need with the launch of its 2018 ‘Kilo of Kindness’ global charity campaign.

Now in its fourth year, the successful initiative, which honours the United Nations International Day of Charity on 5 September, calls on guests to donate at least one kilo of food, clothing and educational supplies to disadvantaged communities around the world, with a focus on underprivileged youngsters.

This year more than 30 hotels across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East are backing the campaign, which runs from 1-15 September. Guests and visitors are invited to drop off at least one kilo of supplies at any participating hotel lobby, which will then be distributed locally by the charities each property has partnered with.

High-priority items include books, notebooks and stationery such as pens, pencils, rulers and erasers; canned foods such as tuna, soup, fruit, vegetables and concentrated milk; dry foods like rice, beans, oats, pasta, cereals, flour, powdered milk, baby formula, tea and coffee; and clothing for adults and children.

Last year, 8,500 kilos of supplies were donated to participating hotels – a figure Mövenpick hopes to surpass with its 2018 campaign. While each guest is encouraged to donate a ‘Kilo of Kindness’, all contributions will be gratefully received.

“Our Kilo of Kindness initiative has grown from strength to strength and in 2018, we are rallying support company-wide and across as many channels as possible in the hope it will be the charity drive’s most successful year yet,” said Olivier Chavy, President and CEO, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts. “This is a global programme with a local focus – giving back to the communities where our properties are located and encouraging our colleagues and guests to do the same, which very much reflects Mövenpick’s corporate values and its commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR).”

The ‘Kilo of Kindness’ campaign is part of the company’s global CSR programme, SHINE, which groups initiatives around three pillars — Environment, Employer and Social Sustainability — with Education the thread common to each.

CCMG launch The Nordic MICE Summit

At the beginning of November, the doors will open for the first edition of The Nordic MICE Summit.

CCMG organize for the first time The Nordic MICE Summit at Clarion Hotel & Congress Malmö Live from 1st – 3rd November 2018. The summit primarily applies to Nordic & European hotels, hotel chains, Convention Bureaus and Destination Management Companies that have an interest in a closer cooperation with Nordic & European MICE Buyers.

ICCA Congress 2018 Delegates to Support Dubai Eyesight Charity

The International Congress and Convention Association and the Local Host Committee for the 57th ICCA Congress will work together on several initiatives in aid of Noor Dubai Foundation, which focuses on the prevention of blindness and visual impairment globally

Delegates at the 57th ICCA Congress, taking place in Dubai later this year, will have the opportunity to support a local charity that prevents blindness and visual impairment globally, with organisers partnering with Noor Dubai Foundation on several initiatives.

Meetings industry professionals from around the world are set to descend on Dubai when the annual flagship event of the International Congress and Convention Association comes to the Middle East for the first time, from 11-14 November. As with previous editions of the event, a strong corporate social responsibility (CSR) element has been incorporated, allowing members to contribute to and raise awareness of a global cause.

In the morning on 12 November, the ICCA Charity Run’N’Walk will take place along the Arabian Gulf coastline at La Mer, Dubai’s newest beachfront entertainment, retail and dining district and a popular attraction for both residents and tourists. Meraas, the developer behind La Mer, will be official Venue Sponsor for the event, which is building on the first run at last year’s ICCA Congress in Prague. With the choice of a 3km run or a 1.5km walk, participants will be encouraged to donate to Noor Dubai Foundation.

In addition, throughout the congress delegates will have the opportunity to donate old pairs of glasses, including prescription glasses and sunglasses to Noor Dubai Foundation who will re-lens and distribute these to those in need through its mobile eye clinic campaigns.

Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, said: “When Dubai bid for the ICCA Congress, we made it clear that there would be a robust CSR element, and partnering with Noor Dubai Foundation on these initiatives ensures we are able to live up that promise. In choosing a charity to work with, the Local Host Committee was eager to select an organisation that has an international reach and can make a direct impact on people’s lives, and crucially, we wanted to make sure that delegates could easily get involved. Launched as an initiative in 2008 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and later established as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in 2010, Noor Dubai Foundation has touched the lives of over 27 million individuals across Africa and Asia through free treatment and preventive programmes, including the provision of eye glasses and medication.

Dr. Manal Taryam, board member and CEO Noor Dubai Foundation said: “Funding prevention of blindness programmes is a great opportunity for Corporate Social Responsibility and we would like to thank ICCA and the Local Host Committee for their support. Their contribution will greatly improve both the social and economic conditions of the individuals who will receive treatment through Noor Dubai programmes.”

“According to the World Health Organization, 80% of all visual impairment can be prevented or cured and about 90% of the world's visually impaired live in developing countries. Through our international mobile eye camp outreach programme, Noor Dubai Foundation provides eye medical care in the form of vision screening, surgeries, and medication to those living in remote areas with minimal access to primary healthcare facilities.”

ICCA Congress organisers have seen strong interest in the 57th edition of the event, with registrations outpacing previous editions. In addition to a strong core programme taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre, the event will also feature a series of evening events to facilitate networking and cultural exchanges. Venues will include the Armani Pavilion at the foot of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, and Al Lisaili Desert Camp.

IMEX America 2018: Lessons in legacy and the power of events to direct the future

Legacy, the IMEX Talking Point for 2018, will be the talk of IMEX America when it comes to life through a series of engaging activities including a major research report, a keynote presentation, education sessions and even a wall of inspiring legacy stories!

It begins right from the start with the opening Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Keynote ‘Legacy – the power of events’ on Smart Monday, powered by MPI, and continues throughout the show.

In a keynote sponsored by Visit Anaheim, Julius Solaris, editor of EventMB ( will reveal how events that are planned with a long-term legacy in mind can change lives, businesses and whole communities. He will share findings from a major new industry research report, commissioned by IMEX, researched and produced by EventMB and developed in association with ProColombia.

ProColombia Vice President, Julián Guerrero, explains: “In the 21st century the meetings industry is not only asking questions about what a destination has to offer an event but also how an event can contribute to a destination. This is the idea of legacy.

“Colombia, which has become a very attractive destination for the meetings industry thanks to its diversity, excellence in service and permanent innovation, is focusing on legacy as a way to make meetings in the country a really transformative experience both for attendees and for hosts.”

The legacy research report will review 300 events from all continents under six categories – generational, marketing, meetings design, sponsorship, sustainability and technology. Solaris’s keynote will present the main lessons from top events in each category and be shaped so that meeting and event planners take away insights, ideas and approaches they can easily apply to their own future events.

We reviewed some of the most inspiring events from around the world to give IMEX America attendees a practical roadmap to elevate their events to experiences that change lives, impact new generations and help advance the industry.

EventMB has also researched and produced a new case study for the IMEX Group – “How Events Turned a City Around: The Legacy of Hull.” This is freely available at It tells the story of one city in the UK – Hull – which strategically used events to both reinvent and regenerate itself after successive years of being voted ‘the worst place to live in Britain’.

More than A Meeting

The legacy education at IMEX America continues on Monday afternoon when Ksenija Polla of ICCA and Jane Cunningham of BestCities Global Alliance will deliver ‘More than A Meeting’. The pair will demonstrate how association events can create awareness of a specific health or societal challenge, influence policy makers, support education and youth as well as providing knowledge. They will share examples and help delegates gain a greater appreciation of the impact of their events.

On Tuesday October 16 at 1200 IMEX’s Legacy Talking Point continues when Mariela McIlwraith of the Events Industry Council will present ‘Lasting legacies: How to extend the impact of your event on the local community’. McIlwraith will explore creative ideas for engaging with the community by focusing on legacy planning.

Linda Garzon of the Greater Bogotá Convention Bureau from Colombia will take the legacy learnings further when discussing ‘Synergies for change: How the meetings industry can contribute to the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs)’ on Wednesday October 17 at 14:00. Garzon will be providing tips on how a convention bureau can achieve a ‘win-win’ by contributing to the United Nations’ SDGs by helping leverage local social enterprises.

Curated legacy stories

On the show floor IMEX America will be building a simple, rustic wall designed to display a gallery of legacy stories. Specially curated by the IMEX team, these stories and case studies will be provided by exhibitors, individuals and IMEX staff as a way to inspire attendees with even more legacy ideas. Stories will be grouped into five categories: Political Legacy, Knowledge Economy, CSR, Environmental and Personal.

Since the beginning of the year IMEX has been exploring legacy with the strapline - 'Legacy: What’s yours going to be?’ It has already featured in the IMEX Policy Forum and Exclusively Corporate programmes at IMEX in Frankfurt and throughout EduMonday, the pre-show education day in Frankfurt.

Resounding success for the inaugural UNICEO® European Congress ‘Leading Events to the Future’

UNICEO® - United Networks of International Corporate Event Organizers celebrated its first European Congress in Budapest, Hungary between June 27 and 29.

Attended by over 150 Head of Events from major corporations, the Congress provided insight, knowledge and inspiration, through an innovative format.

The Geneva-based United Networks of International Corporate Event Organizers (UNICEO®) recently celebrated its inaugural European Congress in the Hungarian capital. Held at the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus, located in central Budapest just metres from the emblematic Danube, the two-day congress brought together over 150 UNICEO members and keynote speakers. Numerous countries were represented from the UK to Russia, the UAE to China.

Entitled ‘‘Leading Events to the Future’, the Congress provided two full days of insight, knowledge and inspiration for participants with the aim of letting them experience the “Power of Collective Intelligence”.

Divided into four thematic sections, Measurement, Engagement, Technology and Innovation, and Leadership, the Congress programme adopted an innovative format with keynote sessions, panel discussions and Collective Intelligence Activities where participants were able to share ideas and pool resources while working on practical issues that are commonplace in their everyday roles as event organizers.

Measurement saw keynotes speakers offer insight into why live events are more important than ever before; how to tap into participants’ minds to reveal the extent of their engagement; and how to measure the success of social media. UNICEO members discovered how the avocado is the new superfood of storytelling, why 95% of conventional data collection is ineffective and the power of the #Paris2024 hashtag.

The engagement section focused on how to keep event participants’ minds from wandering to ensure they get maximum benefit from an event. UNICEO members were treated to a spectacular magic trick, tips from a panel of experts on how to engage very different event attendees plus a lively generational debate.

The morning of Technology and Innovation tackled diverse topics such as face recognition at event registration, the up-and-coming trend of gamification and how start-up technology will change big events such as the Olympics. UNICEO members also had the opportunity to visit the Tech Place where numerous companies offered innovative tricks and tools for events as we move into the future.

The final session looked at Leadership. UNICEO members discovered from a military General why style is important to be a true leader and from Marriott International why caring for your team and employees is essential to lead efficiently. Finally, participants´ own leadership skills were tested to the limit in the last Collective Intelligence Activity where they had to manage a crisis.

Keynote speakers: The first UNICEO European Congress brought together some of the world’s most eminent event organizers and keynote speakers. Members heard from top professionals from companies across the board – Bayer, Cisco Systems, Heineken, HP, Marriott International, Microsoft, Schneider Electric and UBS, to name just a few. Speakers from all walks of life including military offered their insight and advice, all under the expert guidance of the Master of Ceremonies, Laura Schwartz. White House Director of Events under the Clinton administration, Schwartz also had plenty of best practice tips to pass on to UNICEO members. Opening was made by Bob Bejan, Head of Experiential Marketing and Events at Microsoft International.
